UPSC CSE Selection Procedures -Books

Plan of Examination:

The Civil Services Examination will consist of two successive stages (vide Appendix I Section-I)

(i) Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination; and

(ii) Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various Services and posts noted above.

Applications are now invited for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination only. TheCandidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified for admission to the Civil Services (Main) Examination will have to apply online again and submit on-line Detailed Application Form-I [DAF-I] along with scanned documents/certificates in support of date of birth, category {viz. SC/ST/ OBC (without OBC Annexure) /EWS [Economically Weaker Sections]
(without EWS Annexure) /PwBD / Ex-Serviceman} and educational qualification with required Examination Fee.

The candidates who are declared to have qualified Civil Services (Main) Examination will be required to mandatorily indicate order of preferences only for those services participating in the Civil Services Examination for the year, for which he is interested to be allocated to, in the on-line

Detailed Application Form-II [DAF-II], before the commencement of Personality Tests (Interview) of the examination. Further, the candidates who wish to indicate IAS/IPS as their Service preference are advised to indicate all the Zones and Cadres in the order of preference in their on-line DAF-II as per the extant Cadre Allocation Policy applicable for the Civil Services Examination, 2020. With this DAF-II, a candidate will also be required to upload documents/certificates for higher education, achievements in different fields, service experience, OBC Annexure (for OBC category only), EWS Annexure [for EWS Category only], etc.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Preparation Tips

Candidates should have a clear understanding of how many questions they need to attempt for a desired score. There is no sectional time limit so candidates should have an idea of what sequence to take and how much time to devote to a particular section.

During this phase, the candidate must analyze the time required on each subject and divide the number of days that they may give on a particular subject for thorough preparation. Time Management plays a major role while preparing for the exam.

Knowing the syllabus before starting off the preparation procedure will give an extra boost and will also make the topics and chapters to be studied familiar. While allotting the number of days and hours to each chapter and subjects, you should remember to give more time to those concepts which you might find difficult as compared to the rest.

Mock tests are very much recommended to help boost the preparation process. You can attempt online test series and mock tests by coaching institutes or other mediums. Along with the mock tests, you can also solve sample papers and previous year question papers. taken seriously, it has its own benefits that candidates may get to know while attempting the question paper. Once the candidates have covered all the syllabi, they must take as many mock tests as possible. In order to cover the overall syllabus without missing any topic, candidates must go through the syllabus provided on the official website .

Along with the syllabus, candidates must be aware of GATE paper pattern and its trending changes. Having an idea about the exam pattern prior to taking the final test will help them to solve the paper with ease. Early preparation start is important, however maintaining it is also equally important.

One of the most effective ways to make sure to do well in the examination is constant revision. Once the syllabus is completed, you will have to make sure that revision is included in your study schedule. Group studies are a great medium to resolve all confusion regarding the syllabus with the help of different individuals.

The distribution of each topic in the paper will help a candidate in prioritizing the topic which needs to be covered first. Take topic wise and overall mock tests to know where you stand in terms of application. Before beginning, to craft a preparation strategy candidates must be aware of the syllabus and other related information.
An organized schedule considering one’s strengths and weaknesses in various topics will have better and long-lasting results on the actual performance.
